Jane Upin has been Professor of Humanities in the City Colleges of Chicago as well as a
Visiting Professor of Philosophy at University of Illinois Chicago. She received her Ph.D. in
philosophy from the University of Chicago and has been the recipient of three awards from the
National Endowment for the Humanities. Her work centers on how the built environment shapes
the human condition, on the connections between architectural design and morality. She has also
written on philosophy of the social sciences and pragmatist feminism. Publications in the journal
Hypatia include "Charlotte Perkins Gilman: Instrumentalism Beyond Dewey."
